Dermatologist-led care

Fungal skin infections

Fungal infections can affect the body, groin, feet, scalp or nails. An itchy or ring-shaped rash may be fungal, but eczema, psoriasis and other conditions can resemble it.

At CUTIS in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad), Dr Mahendra Sonune plans care after a clinical evaluation. This page is general information, not an individual diagnosis or prescription.

When to seek an assessment

Seek evaluation when a rash spreads, recurs after treatment, affects the scalp or nails, or has been treated repeatedly without a clear diagnosis.

Tell the dermatologist about creams already used, especially mixed creams containing steroids, and whether others at home have similar symptoms.

How we approach the consultation

Dr Sonune reviews the site, appearance, duration, prior medicines and possible sources of reinfection. A skin or nail sample can be considered if confirmation is needed.

The type and extent of infection, and the patient's health and medicines, guide whether a topical or oral treatment is appropriate.

Care options to discuss

Recommendations depend on the diagnosis, medical history and suitability. Depending on the findings, the discussion may include:

  • An appropriate antifungal treatment plan follows the diagnosis and affected site.
  • Care advice may cover keeping the area dry, hygiene and preventing spread or reinfection.
  • If the rash is not fungal, the treatment plan changes; repeated unsupervised steroid combinations can obscure the diagnosis.

Expectations and follow-up

Treatment duration varies by site and severity, and nails or scalp may need a different approach from body skin. Follow-up is useful when the rash persists, recurs or the initial diagnosis is uncertain.
